Cesarean Section (C-Section)

A cesarean section (C-section) is a surgical procedure used to deliver puppies or kittens when natural birth is not possible, unsafe, or delayed. This procedure can be life-saving for both the mother and her offspring.

At Peak Pet Urgent Care, we perform C-sections on-site when urgent delivery intervention is needed. Our experienced veterinary team is prepared to handle high-risk deliveries and provide immediate care for newborn puppies or kittens.

We provide:

  • Rapid evaluation and decision-making for delivery
  • Advanced anesthesia and monitoring tailored to the mother and her litter
  • Immediate neonatal care for newborns
  • Coordination with your primary care veterinarian for ongoing postpartum care

Our goal is to safely deliver healthy babies while protecting the health of the mother.

Aftercare and Going Home

Most mothers are able to go home within 24 hours, depending on recovery and litter size.

Your pet will be sent home with:

  • Pain medications for comfort
  • Antibiotic medication to prevent infection
  • Instructions for incision care
  • Guidance on nursing, nutrition, and monitoring her litter

Incision and Home Care

  • Keep the incision clean and dry
  • Prevent licking or scratching at the surgical site
  • An E-collar (cone) may be necessary for the first few days

Monitor the mother for appetite, urination, defecation, and interaction with her litter.

  • Ensure all puppies or kittens are nursing properly
  • Monitor for signs of weakness or illness
  • Keep the nesting area clean and warm
  • Seek veterinary attention for any neonate showing distress
Contact a veterinarian immediately if you notice:

  • Swelling, redness, or discharge at the incision
  • Persistent vomiting, lethargy, or loss of appetite in the mother
  • Newborns who are not nursing or appear weak
Our goal with cesarean sections is to safely deliver healthy puppies or kittens while protecting the health and comfort of the mother. If your pet is having trouble with labor or you have concerns about delivery the team at Peak Pet Urgent Care is ready to provide urgent, compassionate care.
