Eye Enucleation

Eye enucleation is a surgical procedure in which an eye is permanently removed. While this can sound alarming, enucleation is often the most compassionate option when an eye is painful, severely damaged, or affected by disease that cannot be safely or effectively treated.

Care at Peak Pet Urgent Care

At Peak Pet Urgent Care, we are able to perform eye enucleation surgery on-site. Our medical team is experienced in managing urgent and painful eye conditions and understands how stressful these situations can be for both pets and their families.

We provide:

  • Prompt surgical intervention when eye injuries or disease cannot wait
  • Advanced anesthesia and continuous monitoring throughout the procedure
  • Comprehensive pain management before and after surgery
  • Clear discharge instructions and coordination with your primary care veterinarian for follow-up care

Our priority is to relieve pain quickly while ensuring your pet’s safety and comfort.

Aftercare and Going Home

Most pets are able to go home the same day after eye enucleation.

Your pet will be sent home with:

  • Pain medications to keep them comfortable
  • Antibiotics if indicated
  • Detailed home care and activity instructions

Incision and Home Care

  • Keep the incision clean and dry
  • Prevent rubbing, scratching, or pawing at the surgical site
  • An E-collar (cone) must be worn at all times when not directly supervised
  • Sutures are typically removed in 12–14 days

Pets adapt remarkably well to vision loss in one eye.

  • Most pets return to normal activity quickly
  • Depth perception may be temporarily affected
  • Indoor pets adjust especially well
  • Removing a painful eye often results in a noticeable improvement in comfort and behavior
Contact a veterinarian immediately if you notice:

  • Swelling, redness, or discharge at the incision
  • Bleeding or the incision opening
  • Lethargy, fever, or decreased appetite
  • Signs of pain that are not improving
Our goal with eye enucleation is to relieve pain, prevent further complications, and restore comfort. If your pet is suffering from a severe eye condition and you have questions about this procedure or next steps, the team at Peak Pet Urgent Care is here to help guide you through the process with compassion and care.
