Pyometra

Pyometra is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus in unspayed female dogs and cats. It occurs most often in older pets, typically several weeks after a heat cycle, and requires urgent veterinary attention.

At Peak Pet Urgent Care, we perform pyometra surgeries (ovariohysterectomy) on-site. Our experienced team is trained to handle urgent and high-risk surgical cases with careful monitoring and advanced supportive care.

We provide:

  • Immediate evaluation and stabilization of pets with pyometra
  • Advanced anesthesia and continuous monitoring
  • Skilled surgical removal of the infected uterus and ovaries
  • Post-operative monitoring for pain, hydration, and overall recovery
  • Coordination with your primary care veterinarian for follow-up care

Our priority is to safely treat the infection and restore your pet’s health as quickly as possible.

What the Surgery Involves

Pyometra surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

During the procedure:

  • The infected uterus and ovaries are carefully removed
  • The abdomen is sutured closed
  • Pets are monitored closely as they recover from anesthesia

Aftercare and Going Home

Most pets are able to go home within 24–48 hours, depending on their condition and recovery.

Your pet will be sent home with:

  • Pain medications to keep them comfortable
  • Antibiotic medication to prevent infection
  • Instructions for incision care and restricted activity
  • Guidance on monitoring for signs of infection or complications

  • Keep the incision clean and dry
  • Prevent licking or scratching at the surgical site
  • An E-collar (cone) is recommended
  • Sutures are typically removed in 10–14 days

Monitor your pet for normal appetite, urination, and activity.

Contact a veterinarian immediately if you notice:

  • Swelling, redness, or discharge at the incision
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, or lack of appetite
  • Lethargy, weakness, or difficulty breathing
  • Signs of infection or illness in the days following surgery
Our goal with pyometra surgery is to save lives, relieve pain, and prevent severe complications. If your unspayed female pet is showing signs of illness or you suspect pyometra, the team at Peak Pet Urgent Care is ready to provide urgent, compassionate care on-site.
