Rhinoscopy

Rhinoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows a veterinarian to examine the nasal passages using a small camera (endoscope). It is most commonly used to investigate chronic or unexplained nasal symptoms and can help identify the underlying cause without invasive surgery.

What the Procedure Involves

During rhinoscopy:

  • A small camera is gently passed into the nasal passages
  • The nasal cavity is examined for inflammation, infection, foreign material, masses, or structural abnormalities
  • The procedure may involve anterior rhinoscopy (from the nostrils) and/or posterior rhinoscopy (from behind the soft palate)

Foreign Body Removal

If a foreign object (such as grass, seeds, or debris) is identified, it may be removed during the procedure using specialized instruments. Removing foreign material can provide immediate relief and often resolves clinical signs quickly.

Biopsy and Sampling

If a foreign object is identified, it may be removed during the procedure.

  • Biopsies of abnormal tissue
  • Samples for culture or cytology

These samples are sent to a laboratory to help diagnose conditions such as:

  • Chronic inflammation or infection
  • Fungal disease
  • Nasal tumors or polyps

Most pets are able to go home the same day following rhinoscopy.

Your pet may experience:

  • Mild sneezing
  • Temporary nasal discharge
  • Small amounts of blood-tinged discharge

These signs are usually short-lived and resolve on their own.

Your pet may be sent home with:

  • Medications such as antibiotics, antifungals, or anti-inflammatory drugs, depending on findings
  • Instructions for monitoring at home
  • Minimally invasive
  • No external incisions
  • Allows diagnosis and treatment in the same procedure
  • Helps avoid more invasive exploratory surgery
Contact a veterinarian if you notice:

  • Heavy or persistent nosebleeds
  • Worsening nasal discharge
  • Facial swelling or pain
  • Lethargy or decreased appetite
Our goal with rhinoscopy is to accurately diagnose the cause of nasal disease while minimizing discomfort and recovery time for your pet. If you have questions about whether rhinoscopy is appropriate for your pet or what the results may mean, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
