Anal Sacculectomy

An anal sacculectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the anal sacs in pets. This surgery is often recommended for pets with chronic anal sac disease, recurrent infections, or tumors affecting the anal sacs. While pets normally use their anal sacs to mark territory and aid in
defecation, removal is generally well-tolerated and prevents recurrent painful episodes.

Our goal is to resolve chronic anal sac issues safely and minimize discomfort for your pet.

What the Surgery Involves

Anal sacculectomy is performed under general anesthesia.

During the procedure:

  • The anal sacs are carefully removed
  • The area is sutured closed
  • Pets are closely monitored during recovery

Aftercare and Going Home

Most pets are able to go home the same day or within 24 hours.

Your pet will be sent home with:

  • Pain medications to ensure comfort
  • Antibiotic medication to prevent infection
  • Instructions for incision care and restricted activity
  • Guidance on monitoring urinary output and overall recovery

  • Keep the surgical site clean and dry
  • Prevent licking or scratching at the area with an E-collar (cone)
  • Monitor for signs of swelling, redness, or discharge
  • Sutures are dissolvable so no suture removal is needed; they will dissolve in 12-14 days
Contact a veterinarian immediately if you notice:

  • Swelling, redness, or discharge at the surgical site
  • Persistent straining, difficulty defecating, or diarrhea
  • Lethargy, loss of appetite, or signs of pain
  • Any other concerning symptoms following surgery
Our goal with anal sacculectomy is to relieve chronic discomfort, prevent infection, and improve your pet’s quality of life. If your pet is suffering from recurrent anal sac disease or tumors, the team at Peak Pet Urgent Care is ready to provide timely, compassionate care.
